In the year 2019, automotive industry had seen a rise in electrical cars such as Ford’s Mustang Mach-E and e-scooter that prove to be highly economical. As 2020 approaches, there are certain market and tech trends which will appear and may lower the cost in transportation industry.

Following 10 trends are to look for in 2020:

1) Giants will purchase electrical trucks to lower costs for beverage routes, last-mile delivery and short-haul. This years, Amazon emerged as a leading company to purchase 100,000 electric delivery vans from startup Rivian. Following the trend, UPS, FedEx and DHL have also purchased some electric trucks. With cities banning diesel trucks in urban areas, it is expected that 2020 will see a rise in the trend for electrical motors.

2) Congestion pricing has come into effect in European countries which are focusing on “greenzones” and diesel bans. New York has also put in place congestion prices which leads to less air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions as seen in London. Other countries are also introducing incentives for public to use greener travelling options such as scooters usage in downtown streets in San Francisco.

3) Alternative options for scooters: While 2018 saw a ban on scooters, in 2020, most riders will opt for scooters for economical travel. It will emerge as a faster method to travel to destinations for commuters, tourists and school kids.

4) Electrical vehicle charging with clean energy: In the method where the biodigestor captures methane from the local cow waste, and the methane can be converted into renewable electricity for the power grid. Automaker company BMW who have placed this method at work have reported this as “ChargeForward” where there cars are run by solar power.

5) Proactive Utility through EV charging: Though there needs a lot of planning in developing models for electric charging depots, it has proved to be effective and economical tool in automotive industry. 2020 will see a rise in electrical infrastructure.

6) Rise Electric Commuter Shutter: As the battery range has increased over the past few years (ranging 70 miles), there would be more electric commuter shutter available. In turn, pressurizing tech companies to decarbonize shuttle fields.

7) E-school Buses: In 2020, a market, vehicle-to-grid, could rise through electric school buses. As school buses are only used for small period of time during the day, it could be the most effective mode for utility. If E-buses show a high range of success in Virginia, they could be a high rise in 2020.

8) E-commerce give rise to environment concerns: As more consumers are shopping online for prime deliveries, there is a rise in air pollution. Environmental Defense Fund is working on pressuring retailers to deliver using electrical trucks. IKEA and Etsy are first to join the cause to use more E-trucks to lessen air pollution.

9) Infrastructure advances as electrical charging increases: Companies are not looking for advance in infrastructure where dozens or hundreds of heavy-duty vehicle can be charged. There will be more open standards work of digital communications network.

10) Urban E-Cargo Bikes: E-cargo bike is another funky trend to decarbonizing UPS and Amazon have deployed e-cargo bikes which will commute on bike lanes and sidewalks as more economical option for deliveries. Beside the advantage of being battery operated, they also reduce traffic congestion.
